Entrepreneurial Development Programmes

There is a saying that entrepreneurs are the products of nature, nurture, and culture. This is very true, particularly in the Indian context. Apart from the nature and the culture, the role of nurture is very important for human resource development.

EDP works to strengthen entrepreneurial skills through capacity building and training resources

The term ‘nurture’ here implies the ‘training intervention’. This is a real endeavor towards entrepreneurial development. The myth that entrepreneurs are born and not made no longer holds good. Entrepreneurs can be developed and trained to undertake ventures.

The entrepreneurial faculties can be developed through planned efforts. People are motivated, trained, and developed to be entrepreneurs.

Ordinary persons can be turned into successful entrepreneurs through well-designed training programs conducted by entrepreneurial development institutes.

Meaning of Entrepreneurial Development Programmes

Entrepreneurial Development Programmes

Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) aim at the comprehensive development of trainees as entrepreneurs. Development of an entrepreneur means inculcating entrepreneur traits into a person, imparting the required knowledge, and developing the technical, financial, marketing, and managerial attitude.

The process of entrepreneurship development involves equipping a person with the information used for enterprise building and sharpening his entrepreneurial skills.

The Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) is a special program that helps people become better entrepreneurs. It teaches them the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their entrepreneurial journey. EDP offers various programs that provide valuable information to aspiring entrepreneurs.

These programs cover topics like coming up with a new business idea, starting a new business, creating a project report, finding sources of finance, understanding restrictions and licenses, and even learning about incentives and subsidies. EDP is like a guidebook that equips individuals with the necessary tools to excel in their entrepreneurial roles.

Thus, EDP is an organized program for identifying potential entrepreneurs and motivating them to start ventures of their own by teaching entrepreneurial traits and imparting technical and managerial skills.

Need for EDP (Importance/Rationale/Relevance of EDP)

  • EDP is important because it has many benefits: EDP helps people who want to start their businesses but need to gain the skills to be successful owners.
  • EDP helps unemployed people to opt for self-employment and entrepreneurial careers by offering various programs.
  • EDP is really important because it helps make industrialization happen faster. Plus, it also helps to make sure that economic power isn’t all in one place.
  • EDP helps in the effective utilization of scarce resources by giving training and education to entrepreneurs.
  • EDP allows people from underdeveloped and indigenous areas to start their businesses with the assistance of the government and institutions.
  • EDP also aids in spreading economic opportunities across various regions by offering training and support to the local community.
  • EDP helps in the creation of employment opportunities.
  • EDP improves the standard of living of the weaker sections of the community.
  • EDP can ensure the involvement of all sections in the process of economic growth.
  • EDP helps a business owner start a company and make it work well by providing advanced programs.
  • EDP helps in achieving a higher rate of economic growth.

Thus, EDP is necessary to motivate potential entrepreneurs to convert their dreams/ ideas into action. It may be noted that EDP is not merely a training program. It also develops a social and organizational framework that enables potential entrepreneurs to perceive opportunities and learn to respond to them.

In short, EDP helps in:

  • eliminating poverty and unemployment
  • balanced regional growth
  • harnessing locally available resources
  • prevention of industrial slums (e) reducing tension among youth.

The objectives of EDP may be divided into two short-term and long-term objectives. These are given below:

Objectives of EDP

Short-term objectives

Short term objectives

Short-term objectives imply the objectives which are to be achieved immediately after the completion of the program. The short-term objectives are:

  • To help in selecting a project/product.
  • To make the participants understand the process and procedures of setting up business enterprises.
  • To help in the formulation of the project…
  • To understand and have control over where to get the help and support needed to start a business.
  • To prepare a person mentally for the entrepreneurial venture.

Long-term objectives

Long term objectives

In the long run an EDP seeks to equip the participants with all the skills required for the establishment and smooth running of business ventures. The long-run objectives are:

  • To identify and train potential entrepreneurs.
  • To develop necessary knowledge and skills among the participants.
  • To impart basic managerial understanding.
  • To develop small and medium-scale industrial sectors.
  • Being an entrepreneur has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a look at the good and bad sides of an entrepreneur.
  • To improve the performance of small industries.
  • To industrialize rural and backward regions.
  • To provide gainful self-employment to educated youths.

Phases of EDP

An EDP consists of three broad phases. They are:

1. Initial or Pre-training Phase

It includes the activities and preparation required to launch the training program. The main things we do are:

  • (1) Making the place ready for training
  • (2) Planning what we will teach
  • (3) Getting everything ready for the start of the program
  • (4) Creating ways to choose the right tools and techniques
  • (5) Publicity campaign for the program
  • (6) Development of application form, etc.

2. Training or Development Phase

At this stage the training program is implemented to develop motivation and skills among the participants. They are given practical exposure in areas like market surveys, preparation of projects and their feasibility reports, marketing of products and services, etc.

The purpose of training is to develop the need for achievement, i.e., motivation among the trainees. Both theoretical and practical knowledge is imparted to the trainees. The training program is usually of 6 weeks duration.

3. Post-Training or Follow-up Phase

EDPs help people become better entrepreneurs by giving them the skills and drive they need to start their businesses… The success or failure of EDPs depends upon the extent to which the objective’s weaknesses, if any, and draw up plans for removing these bottlenecks in the future. In short, this of EDPs has been achieved. Through follow up we can understand that our past performance phase involves assessment to judge how far the objectives of the program have been achieved.

Course Content and Curriculum of EDP

Once the selection of potential entrepreneurs is over, they have to be equipped with managerial and technical skills to start the venture. As already stated, in an EDP, there are candidates with a variety of backgrounds and qualities. Hence, a package of training inputs is provided during the training program.

Here are the main things we learned during training:

Technical Knowledge and Skills

To become a successful entrepreneur, it’s important to know a lot about the technical stuff related to the business you want to start. You should be good at understanding how things are made. To do this, it’s crucial to have hands-on training that combines practical experience with solid theory. You also need to learn about the money side of things, like how much it costs to make your product and what you’ll gain from it.

Achievement Motivation Training

People need to develop their desire to achieve things in life. That’s why we have achievement motivation training. The goal of this training is to make people want to achieve more and more. We try to make them feel confident and have a positive attitude towards business. We use different activities like games, tests, and role-playing to motivate them. This kind of training helps people become more aware of themselves and have more confidence. Without achievement motivation, executive development programs would be just like any other program. Motivation training helps people get into business or grow their businesses.

Project Management Training

Project inputs are required to help potential entrepreneurs to develop their project ideas into viable projects. They need to be provided with the right guidance to choose the right products. They should also be taught about the important information regarding the possibility, success, and execution of the project. People who want to start their businesses should be taught about the importance of completing the project on time. They should receive proper training on how to schedule different tasks, ensure effective supervision, and avoid delays and increased costs.

Support Systems and Procedures

To launch a new venture, the entrepreneur requires assistance and support from many institutions and agencies like banks, other financial institutions, industrial service corporations, and other agencies dealing with the supply of raw materials, pieces of machinery, etc. They need to understand how to talk to them, ask for help, and use the services they offer. So, people who want to start a business should be given lots of information about what the government and other groups can do for them. They should also learn about the steps they need to take to get that help.

Market Survey

The participants should be given opportunities to conduct market surveys. This will assist them in evaluating the various marketing options and learning about how to do business in different markets.

Managerial Skill

Once a participant can start the enterprise, he requires managerial skills. Participants should be taught about different areas of managing money, making products, and selling them. They should learn about everything related to handling finances. Managerial skills are particularly essential for a small-scale entrepreneur because he cannot afford to employ management experts in different areas of management.

Industrial Visits/In-plant Training

Practical exposure is also necessary. Depending upon their products, the potential entrepreneurs may feel the need to gain more knowledge about the production process, factory layout, etc. For this purpose, factory visits will have to be arranged. Similarly, entrepreneurs who select relatively sophisticated products will be expected to have a good idea of the product and the processes. For such entrepreneurs, in-plant training should be arranged.

Project Preparation

Arrangements should be made to teach the participants the method of preparing a project.

During training to identify appropriate business opportunities, information and counseling on various possible business opportunities is provided. You can gain important experience by doing market surveys, preparing projects, and learning about different sources of finance.
